    MarineQuest is the "hands-on, feet-wet" marine and environmental education outreach program for UNCW. UNCW is a five minute drive from local beaches. For the past 30 years, MarineQuest has been offering the highest quality summer academic enrichment camps for children ages 5 - 17. Outdoor habitat exploration, lab activities, creative arts and age appropriate activities are part of every academically sound camp. We invite you to enroll your child in one of our unique camps where learning and enjoyment meet at the edge of the sea!

    Ages 17: Oceans 17
    Oceans 17 provides serious marine science enthusiasts with the chance to conduct lab and field based experimental research and participate in community service projects that benefit our marine environment. In addition to their terrestrial and wetland studies, students will dive into the ocean and learn the ins and outs of scientific SCUBA in either a PADI open water diver or PADI advanced diver course. Students will use these new skills to collect and interpret data that supports current research being conducted by scientists at UNCW. In between their research students will enjoy kayaking, surfing, boogie boarding, boating, snorkeling and more...

    Ages 15-16: O.C.E.A.N.S.
    Think you want to be a marine biologist? How about an oceanographer? Maybe you prefer marine technology specialist? You can check out your career options at our program designed to let you step into the swim fins of different types of marine scientists. Gain first-hand experience using a variety of field equipment to collect data and monitor the marine environment. Participate in a full day research cruise trawling to collect specimens and learning how to use aboard ship instruments. Discover how underwater remotely operated vehicles support ocean exploration and try your hand at flying our Video Ray.

    Ages 15-16: Camp O.C.E.A.N.S. Gulf Stream
    Our popular camp O.C.E.A.N.S. now condensed to a one-week camp designed for commuter campers. Come check out your career options as a marine biologist, an oceanographer or a marine technology specialist. Our camp is designed to let you step into the swim fins of different types of marine scientists and gain some first-hand experience using the kinds of instruments and ROV technology their research requires.

    Ages 14 - 17: Sea Shots
    Are you a fan of Animal Planet, National Geographic or the Discovery Channel? Ever wonder what it would be like to document the underwater world yourself? Join MarineQuest and explore the ocean through a new lens as you become a certified PADI National Geographic diver! While diving into this exciting underwater world, professional dive instructors will work with you to improve your buoyancy and navigation skills as you set off to complete an underwater exploration project using digital photography. Whether you are completing a photo journal of local marine life or doing a photo documentation of local shipwrecks, your chosen project will provide you with the opportunity to think, observe and document like a real marine scientist. All Sea Shooters will exhibit their final projects at the end of the week as they share their new discoveries.

    Ages 14 - 17: Dive Hawks
    Dive into the world beneath the sea with MarineQuest’s newest program Dive Hawks. This week long dive intensive program will provide young marine enthusiasts with an opportunity to earn their PADI open water dive certification which they will use to explore the ocean’s amazing aquatic life, beautiful artificial reefs and historical ship wrecks. Learn how SCUBA has changed the way marine scientists study the ocean through underwater research techniques. Explore the careers of an underwater archeologist, media diver, and dive safety officer. Familiarize yourself with SCUBA equipment, diving techniques, and dive safety while gaining the skills needed to become a confident diver.

    Ages 13 - 17: ArtSea
    Experience MarineQuest through the eyes of an artist! Campers will focus on different artistic interpretations of marine plants, animals and habitats. Each day they will explore local habitats to garner inspiration and then spend time in the art studio creating their own masterpieces. Guest artists will instruct students in different mediums and share how their own work inspires others to appreciate and protect the marine environment. Students will display their work on the final day in our ArtSea Gallery show.

    Ages 12 - 16: Shore Shots
    Are you a fan of Animal Planet, National Geographic or the Discovery Channel? Ever considered a career as a photojournalist? If so, our camp for aspiring videographers might appeal to you. Document environmental topics related to our marine habitats using digital photography, video recordings and underwater images to create your own public service announcement that will move your audience to appreciate and protect our coastal environment. Debut your PSA as well as your other photographic work at the Friday premiere.

    Ages 14 - 17: Ocean CheMystery 
    Discover the underlying chemical basis for some of the ocean's most mysterious environmental challenges. Why do sharks contain mercury? Why do whales have blisters? Why are corals dissolving? Investigate the analytical techniques that forensic chemists use to solve these kinds of mysteries. Learn how chemicals cycle through our atmosphere, lithosphere and hydrosphere to impact life in the ocean. Explore a variety of coastal habitats while collecting data to monitor the marine environment.

    Ages 14 - 17: TechnOcean 
    Coastal and marine technology has come a long way since the maritime days of the past, but how have these changes helped us improve and manage our coastal habitats? Join MarineQuest as we explore the exciting fields of Coastal Environmental Engineering and Marine Technology. Experience first hand how natural and artificial barriers are used to protect coastlines. Learn how scientists use technology to visualize the ocean floor. Discover how man-made islands can be restored into animal oases. And put your "Going Green" skills to the test as you build an ocean energy machine.

    Ages 13 - 14: Ocean Lab
    Spend a week at Ocean Lab immersing yourself in the field of marine biology.  Explore the biodiversity of the ocean, from the tiniest microbes to the largest whale, and discover some of the key species inhabiting our coastal waters.  Learn about the important role that ocean chemistry, geology and physics plays in supporting marine life while conducting field studies in that great big outdoor lab we call an ocean.

    Ages 12 - 14: Sea G.E.M.S. (Girls Exploring Marine Science) Girls Only
    Swim in the wake of some truly inspirational marine scientists as you explore the contributions women have made to our understanding of the ocean.  Discover their scientific achievements and learn how they have changed the way we explore the marine environment.  Start your own journey from bikini to wetsuit by spending your days in the fins of a marine scientist.  Gain hands-on experience investigating shark bites, conducting a research cruise, operating an ROV, and in Discover Scuba Diving.  Did you know female faculty and associates at UNCW are actively conducting research on topics such as marine mammals, sea turtles, corals, arctic penguins, deep sea ecology, sharks, and more – and include an original member of the all-woman aquanauts team who served on the Tektite II mission?  Meet and learn from some of these wonderful water women with Sea GEMS!

    Ages 11 - 14: Ocean Trek
    Join MarineQuest as we journey through the ocean to reveal the importance of its chemistry, geology and physics to the many biological species that inhabit our coastal waters. Trekkies will use the tools of oceanographers, meteorologists and paleontologists to analyze how the forces of nature have created the coastal habitats that we see today. Discover some of the key marine organisms living in our coastal waters and learn about the importance of sustainable fisheries from UNCW research scientists.

    Ages 10 - 13: TechnOcean Jr

    Join MarineQuest as we explore the exciting fields of marine technology and coastal environmental engineering. Learn how scientists use global satellite positioning (GPS) to track ocean animals and then put your knowledge to the test as you use GPS to track down your own discoveries. Jump aboard the R/V Humpback and travel to an undeveloped barrier island and experience first-hand how natural and artificial barriers are used to protect coastlines. Catch a breeze as you discover how wind can be used as a natural energy source. Ride the waves as you build a wave energy machine and take a dip as you listen to the sounds of the sea with your own homemade hydrophone.

    Join MarineQuest as we travel back in time to the age of giant prehistoric sharks and discover how North Carolina’s coast has changed over the years. While time traveling through our coastal habitats back to the future, Trekkies will use the tools of oceanography, meteorology and paleontology to experience first-hand how hurricanes and other forces of nature have created the coastline that we see today. Discover some of the key marine organisms inhabiting our coastal waters and learn about the importance of our coastline for sustainable fisheries.

    Ages 9 - 11: ArtSea Jr
    Pack up your paintbrushes and head to the beach for a week of artistic fun. Explore our coastal marine habitats while learning how to sketch skates, paint puffers, carve crabs and much, much more. Come study art in one of the best studios that mother nature provides - the sea!

    One week camps: June 18 – 22; July 9 – 13; July 23 - 27
    $290 if register before May 1; $315 after May 1.

     

    Ages 9 - 10: Sea SI
    "Extra, extra read all about it: Fish found floating face down! Turtles turn up traumatized by trash! Dolphins discovered with damaged derma." Sea SI investigators will need all of their forensics skills to solve these headline grabbing crimes against marine organisms. Detectives will have to secure the crime scenes, collect evidence, interview witnesses, and identify suspects before they can close these case files.

    Ages 8 - 10: Cape Crusaders:
    Calling all Super Heroes! Our coastal marine habitats need your help. The Marsh Marauder is filling in our wetlands. The Beach Blaster is eroding our shoreline. And the Foul Fiend is polluting our waterways. What's a threatened or endangered species to do? Join the CEPA (Coastal Environmental Protection Agency) and learn how you can use your super powers to help defeat the Ten Most Wanted Villains of our marine environment.

    Ages 7 - 8: Coastal Cruisers
    Take a wild ride with MarineQuest and discover the migratory species that cruise our coast. Track the movements of turtles, sharks, whales and dolphins as they travel our shores. Learn how scientists use tagging, telemetry and photo-identification to document different migratory species in our coastal waters. Experiment with ocean currents and barrier island movement. Discover why hurricanes like to travel our coastline. By the end of the week you'll be a certified Coastal Cruiser, too.

    Ages 7 - 8: Treasure SEAkers
    Avast, me hearties! Join MarineQuest as we plow coastal waters in search of sunken ships and buried treasure. Discover the history of seafaring along our coast including whalers, pirates, and blockade runners. Find out where the island ponies came from. Explore our maritime heritage in naval stores, boat building and fisheries. Learn about the highly prized marine species that have become endangered in our area and find out why they are the real treasure we seek.

    Ages 6 - 8: ArtSea Mini
    Hey all you Pint-size Picassos! Pack up your paintbrushes and head to the beach for a week of artistic fun. Explore our coastal marine habitats while learning how to sketch, paint, sculpt and create coastal critters and other works of art. Come study in one of the best studios that mother nature provides - the sea!

    Ages 5 - 9: Sea Sibs
    Enjoy a week of family fun exploring the marine environment in this camp designed for siblings, cousins and family friends of different ages. Big and little kids will have a great time together as they fish, seine, snorkel and discover our coastal habitats. Learn about family relationships among marine organisms. Make buddies with some amazing sea creatures. Join us and create some MarineQuest memories for your own family album!

    Ages 6 – 7: Sea Safari
    Send your young adventurer on an exciting Sea Safari where they will discover the "big game" of our local marine environment. They’ll hunt for wild animals that survive in our coastal habitats and find out how environmental issues are impacting them - all while learning about the field of vertebrate zoology.

    Ages 5 - 7: Sea Dawgs (Boys Only)

    Ahoy, Matey! Join us for a fun filled week of masculine mayhem at the beach as we explore some of the legendary sailors of the seven seas. Discover crabby crustaceans, ornery oysters, stinky sea worms and other nasty critters that inhabit our coastal environment. Learn about NC's whaling history and get swallowed up by all the fun - just make sure you don't end up in Davy Jones Locker!

    Ages 5 - 7: Mermaids (Girls Only)
    Calling all bathing beauties! Trade-in your legs for a tail fin and join us for a week of girl power exploring coastal habitats, discovering plants and animals that live in them, and searching for any signs of mermaids. Learn all about the legend of the mermaid and the lore of the manatee.

    Ages 5 – 6: Sea Squirts
    Your little squirts will enjoy our fun-filled camp for budding scientists interested in the field of “ickyology”, better known as invertebrate zoology. They’ll explore different marine habitats, discover some of the shelly, fishy, crusty, squishy and scummy critters that live there, and learn about environmental issues that are impacting them.
