Description: "Let's go feed the animals" are often the first words spoken as a camper leaps from the van which has just arrived at day camp. It is the start of another exciting day at the Barn. Promptly at 9 a.m., the bell rings out and the campers gather with their counselors for the morning circles. This is a time for each age group to come together and share plans and goals for the day. The rest of the morning is filled with a variety of challenging and fun programs. The campers rotate through the different activities in groups of ten to twelve. In work projects, girls and boys learn to build a bench. In outdoor living skills they cook over an open fire. Later, on hikes and overnights, campers use these newly learned skills and come to respect and care for out environment. During the morning some campers work hard at Creative Arts coiling pieces of clay that will become a mug for a friend’s birthday. Others create sculptures from wood pieces of perfect a new beading technique. At the Nature Barn, children learn about our natural environment by observing and talking about the many plants and animals they find there. They learn responsibility as they feed and care for the farm animals. Down at the waterfront, a paddle swooshes as a counselor instructs a camper in the proper position for the J-stroke. Swimmers splash as the work hard on their swimming skills. At lunch and playtime campers choose and activity in which they are especially interested. Will it be exploring One of the highlights of each two week session is the overnight camping trip. With great anticipation, the children carry their sleeping bags and other belongings to a campsite for the night, thrilled to be sleeping out and cooking their own meals. As they drift off to sleep under a blanket of stars, thoughts of the challenges met and friendships made become campers' memories of their experience at the Barn. The Barn provides fulfilling programs such as Campcraft, Creative Arts, Nature, Waterfront, Games, Hikes and the culminating Overnight Camping trips that provide fun while introducing kids to a life that is simple, cooperative, and full of adventure and joy.
